HPU Diagnosis – Urine Test
What Goes Wrong in HPU?
A short and easy-to-understand explanation can be found here or in my second podcast episode: HPU – What Is It Actually?.
Why Is the medivere Test Called a Pyrrole Test? Does It Actually Detect HPU?
The term “HPU Test” is a registered trademark of the Dutch company Keac. Therefore, no laboratory is allowed to use this name. Since Keac is not an accredited laboratory, HPUandYou® works exclusively with the medivere test (accredited and ISO-certified). The medivere test detects pyrroles in urine using HPLC measurement.
I Recently Learned About HPU. How Should I Proceed?
Step 1:
Complete the Questionnaire
If you answer many questions with “Yes,” an HPU/Pyrrole test may be useful. You can find more information here and here.
Step 2:
Order a Pyrrole Test
Click here to request the test.
Step 3:
Wait for Your Test Results
After the analysis, you will receive your test results and can plan the next steps.
Do I Need to Stop Taking Supplements Before the Test?
Yes, certain supplements can affect the test result and may lead to a false-negative result.
- You should stop taking zinc, vitamin B6 (including P5P), and manganese at least 7 days before the test.
- If you have been taking zinc and vitamin B6 for more than 3 months, a 4-week break before testing is recommended.
- After an iron infusion, you should wait at least 4 weeks before taking the test.
Is the 24-Hour Test More Reliable?
No. The morning urine test is sufficient and reliable.
How Do I Interpret My Test Results?
- Creatinine (Pyrroles):
- Indicates whether the urine sample can be properly evaluated.
- A fluid intake of approximately 1.5 liters the day before is ideal.
“`
- (Hemo-)Pyrroles:
- An HPU diagnosis is indicated from 6.0 mg/g creatinine and above.
“`
Test Negative Despite Symptoms?
First, check whether the test preparation instructions were followed correctly (zinc/vitamin B6 break, morning urine sample, fluid intake, antibiotics, alcohol, etc.).
I have also observed that the HPU urine test can produce a false-negative result in cases of severe vitamin B6 deficiency. It is possible that the HPL complex cannot be excreted sufficiently due to the severe deficiency, causing the test to appear negative despite the presence of HPU.
→ This should be considered, especially in borderline cases and in individuals with a long history of typical HPU symptoms.
Does It Matter Whether I Have HPU or KPU?
Yes, differences between HPU and KPU have been described. However, since the treatment recommendations are largely the same, this distinction usually has little practical impact for those affected.
You can learn more about it here.
Does the Pyrrole Level Indicate the Severity of the Condition?
No. Pyrrole levels and symptoms do not correlate reliably. People with similar test values can experience very different levels of symptoms.
In addition, pyrrole levels can fluctuate from day to day. Therefore, they do not necessarily reflect the severity of your symptoms.
My Test Is Positive. What Happens Next?
The next step is to start your therapy journey with the right information. Here are some helpful starting points:

“`
Can HPU Be Tested Through a Blood Test?
No.
Can I Take the Test During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding?
Yes, pregnancy and breastfeeding do not affect the test result.
HPU Test for Children – How Do I Collect Urine?
For young children who are not yet dry at night, a urine collection bag (available from your pediatrician or pharmacy) is recommended. The urine collected overnight can be used as the morning sample.
You can find all further information here: HPU in Children – HPU and You
Does a Night-Time Bathroom Visit Count as Morning Urine?
Collect any urine passed after midnight and mix it with the first urine after waking up in the morning.
You can find the instructions here.
Borderline Test Result (Just Below/Above 6.0)?
A value close to 6.0 is generally considered positive and is a clear indication that a holistic treatment approach may be beneficial.
You can learn how to get started in my guide.
Blood Test Values
I Would Like to Have My Blood Values Checked. Which Values Should I Test? And Where?
In our free guide, you will find the most important markers for starting your HPU therapy.
As therapy progresses, it may be useful to check additional blood values or laboratory tests – especially if you are not making progress.
Do I Need to Be Fasting for a Mineral Analysis Blood Test?
No. According to IMD, fasting is not required for full blood mineral analysis.
Do I Need to Stop Taking Supplements Before a Blood Test?
Pausing supplements for 24 hours beforehand is sufficient to accurately assess blood levels.
Can I Have the Full Blood Mineral Analysis from IMD Berlin if I Live in Switzerland or Austria?
Yes. Please contact IMD Berlin customer service for assistance.
What Should I Consider When Taking Supplements?
The most important thing is THAT you take them – exactly when is secondary. Don’t let it become a source of stress: choose times that fit well into your daily routine and spread your intake over 2–3 times per day. You only need to keep a gap between supplements and medications.
Tip: A simple supplement schedule can help.
My Zinc Levels Are Not Increasing. Why?
There can be several reasons for this:
- Not enough zinc-rich foods
- Absorption issues caused by calcium, iron, copper, phosphate, selenium, or vitamin C
- Phytates can bind zinc – for example, if porridge or other phytate-rich foods are consumed at the same time as zinc supplements
- Diarrhea or impaired liver function
- Increased demand due to stress or inflammation
Important: Do not increase zinc blindly. Gut health also plays a major role – if your gut is not functioning properly, zinc cannot be absorbed efficiently.
Learn more in Podcast Episode 26 – Zinc: What to Do (and What Not to Do) When Levels Won’t Increase.
How Should I Measure and Replenish Iron?
To assess iron stores, measuring the ferritin level is recommended. If levels are low, iron can be supplemented in a targeted way. Often, 15–20 mg daily is sufficient.
Iron Bisglycinate is highly bioavailable and generally well tolerated. If iron absorption is impaired or ferritin levels do not increase sufficiently despite supplementation, Iron with Lactoferrin may be beneficial, as lactoferrin can support iron absorption and iron metabolism.
My Phosphorus Level Is Low. What Should I Do?
Protein deficiency is often the cause. Support your body with a protein-rich diet or essential amino acids:
My Homocysteine Level Is Too High/Too Low. Why?
- Too high: Support with folate and B12 – here
- Too low: More protein or sulfur-containing amino acids. Information about methylation can be found here
Is There a Blood Test for Food Intolerances?
An LTT test from IMD Berlin can provide a useful basis. More information can be found here.
Why Can’t My Deficiencies Be Corrected?
- Poor gut health
- Incorrect dosages or stress
- Missing co-factors
The HPU Starter Program or an HPUandYOU® Coach may be helpful.
My Copper Level Is Too High/Too Low. What Should I Do?
More information can be found in this blog article and in Podcast Episode 24 – Don’t Be Afraid of Copper.
What Do Good Blood Values Look Like for Someone with HPU?
Many people feel best with high-normal levels of magnesium, zinc, selenium, manganese, and molybdenum.
What Is the Best Way to Measure Iodine?
An Iodine Urine Test is more informative than measuring iodine in the blood. You can find more information about iodine here.
I Have High Manganese Levels. Why?
This may indicate impaired liver function. Plant compounds such as artichoke, milk thistle, and dandelion may help. You can find a suitable supplement here.
Important: Do not overdose manganese.
Gut Health
I Would Like to Check My Gut Health. Which Gut Test Is Suitable? Is It Also Useful for Leaky Gut?
A comprehensive gut test can be found here. It also includes parameters for identifying Leaky Gut.
I Have Low Stomach Acid. What Can I Do?
This often improves as vitamin B6 levels increase. Taurine may help, as it supports the production of stomach acid.
In more severe cases, Betaine HCl may be beneficial.
How Do I Test and Treat Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)?
Diagnosis is made using a breath test. You can order the test here.
Use the code hpuandyou to receive a 10% discount. Depending on the type of SIBO, embelly offers a treatment plan.
My Protein Digestion Is Poor. What Can I Do?
This is often caused by low stomach acid—usually a result of vitamin B6 deficiency.
How Can I Find Out Which Foods I Don’t Tolerate?
Reactions are often delayed. Possible causes include low stomach acid, intestinal inflammation, or an overstimulated nervous system.
Keep a food diary for 2 weeks and record both your meals and symptoms.
If that is not enough, consider a gut analysis or an intolerance test such as the LTT test from IMD.
For IgG tests: IgG 1–3 is preferred. IgG4 is controversial and expensive.
How Can I Support My Gut Health as Someone with HPU?
- As part of a basic gut restoration program, a binder can be helpful, for example:
- Peat Extract (Trinkmoor) – binds histamine and has anti-inflammatory properties
- Zeolite + Bentonite – binds histamine and heavy metals while protecting the intestinal lining
- L-Glutamine supports the intestinal lining – available here.
- Synerga is commonly used to stimulate and support the intestinal lining.
→ Introduce supplements slowly and one at a time.
- An anti-inflammatory diet is also important:
- Avoid grains/gluten, sugar, dairy products, and processed foods
- Adjust your lifestyle – avoid environmental toxins, regulate the nervous system, and prioritize relaxation
→ Many factors work together to strengthen gut health over the long term.
Vitamin B6
Why Should I Start with Taurine Before Taking Vitamin B6?
Many people with HPU are very sensitive to vitamin B6. Taurine helps to “open” the B6 metabolism, allowing vitamin B6 to be better tolerated when introduced.
Taurine improves digestion, balances neurotransmitters, and supports detoxification. Therefore, it is recommended to include taurine in your therapy.
How Much Vitamin B6 Should I Take?
This is individual and depends on both your needs and tolerance. Most people with HPU feel well with 50 mg. The typical range is between 25–75 mg. Amounts up to 100 mg are considered safe. Increase the dosage gradually to avoid side effects.
Which Vitamin B6 Supplement Should I Take?
- Choose the active form P5P
- Take it as a standalone supplement, not as part of a combination product
- Introduce it slowly and increase the dosage gradually
Here you can find Vitamin B6 products in various dosages.
How Can I Find Out If I Have a Vitamin B6 Deficiency?
The recommended test is the bioactive measurement of vitamin B6 (P5P) through IMD Berlin.
- Values above 10 = sufficient
- Values above 30 = optimal
I Am Sensitive to Vitamin B6. What Can I Do?
- Use vitamin B6 in the form of P5P
- Start with taurine
- Reduce the dosage and increase it gradually
- Check co-factors (zinc, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B2)
- Consider adding a B-complex supplement
Are High Dosages Dangerous?
Vitamin B6 is water-soluble and considered safe up to 100 mg per day. In cases of excessive intake, neuropathies may occur, but these usually improve after discontinuation.
I Can’t Correct My Vitamin B6 Deficiency. What Can I Do?
- Use P5P and taurine
- Check co-factors (zinc, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B2)
- Rule out gut issues (Leaky Gut, SIBO)
- Add a B-complex supplement – B vitamins always work together and depend on one another
- Monitor your levels every 3–4 months
Do I Need to Take Vitamin B6 Long-Term?
If you stop supplementation, your levels should be checked again later, as people with HPU tend to excrete more vitamin B6.
How Do I Find the Right P5P Dosage?
A general guideline is 50 mg per day. Individual adjustments may be necessary. Symptoms of excessive intake can include vivid dreams, inner restlessness, or headaches.
Dietary Supplements
Which Brand Should I Choose for Dietary Supplements for My HPU Therapy?
In the and You Shop, you can find dietary supplements specifically designed for people with HPU. All products are manufactured in Germany, ISO and organic certified, and free from unnecessary additives. They are also citrate-free, making them suitable for people with HPU who have histamine intolerance.
I Am Looking for a Multivitamin. Which One Should I Take?
The and You Shop offers and you multi (active) without copper. This multivitamin is intended for those who are already taking the basic HPU nutrients.
I Would Like to Switch to a Combination Supplement. When Is the Best Time to Do So? Which Product Is Suitable?
The and You Shop offers two HPU combination products for basic nutritional support:
- And You Basic → Ideal for starting HPU therapy.
- And You Advanced → Designed for the maintenance phase.
Can’t I Just Take a Combination Supplement Instead of Everything Separately?
A combination supplement is generally not enough to correct significant deficiencies. It is mainly intended for basic nutritional support. Individual supplements allow you to tailor dosages much more precisely to your personal needs and adjust them when necessary—especially at the beginning of HPU therapy.
Which Capsules Can I Open?
In general, most capsules can be opened, except:
- Iron
- Enzymes
- Probiotics
- Enteric-coated capsules
These should always be swallowed whole.
Are the Products from the and You Shop Suitable for People with Histamine Intolerance?
Yes, all products are free from citrates and are therefore suitable.
Why Do Many People with HPU Take Glutathione?
Glutathione plays an important role in detoxification. Since it is made from the amino acids L-glutamine, cysteine, and glycine, it may be more beneficial for people with HPU to take these building blocks individually so the body can produce glutathione naturally.
When Is the Best Time to Take CoQ10?
CoQ10 should be taken in the morning or before noon with a meal.
How Can I Support Detoxification?
Detoxification in HPU is complex and depends on many factors—from the right nutrients such as zinc, vitamin B6, and the building blocks of glutathione, to stress reduction and minimizing toxin exposure in daily life.
For targeted liver support, and you Liver/Bile may be helpful.
If you would like to explore the topic in more depth, we recommend the Starter Program and the Detoxification Course.
Which Form of Magnesium Should I Take?
This depends on your goals and symptoms. Well-tolerated all-round options include Magnesium Bisglycinate, Malate, and Taurate—they support energy production, the nervous system, muscles, sleep, and stress regulation. If you require larger amounts of magnesium, the powder form is often the best choice.
For those with a sensitive stomach or who react poorly to other forms of magnesium, Magnesium Gluconate is a good option, as it is considered especially gentle on the stomach.
Magnesium L-Threonate can cross the blood-brain barrier and works specifically in the brain. It may be particularly beneficial for brain fog, concentration difficulties, and sleep issues.
Why Should I Take Taurine?
Taurine supports vitamin B6 metabolism, digestion, and detoxification.
Is There a Discount Available for the and You Shop?
Participants in the HPU Starter Program receive a 10% discount. In addition, special offers are regularly available through social media and the newsletter.
You can also join the loyalty program, where you earn points with every purchase that can be redeemed for discounts.
Side Effects
I Often Read That Many Dietary Supplements Are Not Well Tolerated. Why Is That?
I believe that 95% of people with HPU tolerate their supplements well—it’s just that very few people write about it. Then there are individuals with a severe histamine intolerance, a salicylate intolerance, or an oral nickel allergy. In these cases, tolerance issues can occur.
What Side Effects Can Occur When Taking Dietary Supplements?
The symptoms that may occur in connection with dietary supplements are varied. However, it is not always possible to determine with certainty whether they are truly caused by the supplements. Some of the most common side effects include:
- Fatigue
- Lack of energy
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Inner restlessness
- Heart palpitations / rapid heartbeat
- Nausea
- Migraines
I Can’t Tolerate Supplement X. What Can I Do?
Stop taking the supplement for the time being and observe whether your symptoms improve. If they do not, the cause is likely something else. If they do improve, it may be that your body is not yet ready for that supplement.
What you can do:
- Reduce the dosage and restart with a smaller amount.
- Get a new full blood mineral analysis (every 3–4 months) to make appropriate adjustments. More information here.
- Check whether you have histamine intolerance or salicylate intolerance, as some supplements may contain substances that trigger symptoms.
- Choose high-quality products with good bioavailability.
- Work with a therapist or HPUandYOU® coach to investigate your sensitivities individually. Therapist directory here.
I Can’t Tolerate Anything and Can’t Take Any Supplements. What Should I Do?
This can have many causes, such as:
- Overactive mast cells
- Poor gut health
- Heavy metal burden
- Blocked detoxification pathways
- Histamine intolerance
- Salicylate intolerance
If you cannot tolerate anything at all, you should consult a therapist to identify the underlying cause. Online consultations are also available. Here you can find a list of therapists.
Can I Reduce or Eliminate My High Sensitivity Through HPU Therapy?
High sensitivity is very common among people with HPU. Some people find that it decreases somewhat with a well-adjusted therapy, but it usually does not disappear completely. Just as important is learning how to manage it and adapt your lifestyle accordingly.
Sonja shares her personal experience from the HPUandYou Facebook group:
“I accepted it and recognized it as part of my personality—that I’m simply not the extroverted type. Since I started accepting that and shaping my life around it, I’ve been doing much better.
When I know I have events coming up with lots of people and activity, I make sure to schedule quiet time before and after. I also plan my vacations and leisure activities around it. It works really well.
How about taking a more active role in planning social gatherings? Instead of meeting in loud restaurants, go for a walk. Instead of meeting in the evening for drinks, meet in the afternoon in the woods. That works well for me.”
If you would like to discuss this with others, join the Facebook group.
I Struggle with Inner Restlessness, Anxiety, and Panic Attacks. What Can I Do?
HPU can create conditions that contribute to the development of anxiety disorders. The body is often in an unpredictable state due to HPU—especially when histamine-related symptoms are also present.
What you can do:
- Start HPU therapy to help stabilize your body. You can find information in the HPU Starter Program.
- Regulate your nervous system through specific nervous system regulation exercises or with supportive products such as and You Calm, which promotes balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
- Check for a vitamin B6 deficiency, as low B6 levels can worsen anxiety. Excessively high B6 levels (due to increasing the dosage too quickly) can also trigger restlessness.
- Test for heavy metals, as they may place additional stress on the nervous system.
If you have questions or would like support, you can find HPUandYOU® coaches in our therapist directory or connect with others in the Facebook group.
Therapy
Why do I have HPU? And will I have it for the rest of my life?
HPU stands for Haemopyrrollactamuria and describes a metabolic disorder of the heme metabolism. There is still no clear single cause of HPU.
It is assumed that it is either genetic or, for example, acquired through cervical spine trauma. More information can be found here.
Yes, HPU is a lifelong condition. However, it is possible to live completely symptom-free if the condition is well managed through a holistic therapy approach and ongoing metabolic support.
Why do people with HPU have so many symptoms?
There is a deficiency in heme and micronutrients (mostly B6, manganese, zinc). As a result, detoxification is impaired in people with HPU, and many bodily functions are restricted, which can lead to numerous symptoms.
A detailed explanation can be found in the book “Why Am I So Tired?”.
How long does it take before I notice improvements from HPU therapy?
This depends on your initial condition and how consistently you follow the therapy.
Most people with HPU notice initial improvements after 4–6 months when the therapy is implemented correctly.
I am looking for a therapist to support my HPU therapy. Where can I find one with experience in HPU?
A list of trained HPU therapists can be found here. All HPU and You coaches® have completed an intensive training program. Online support is also available.
If you prefer to carry out the therapy independently, there is the HPU Starter Program – a detailed self-learning course with step-by-step guidance.
I am completely new to HPU and want to learn more. What sources are available?
- HPU and You website
- HPU and You blog
- HPU and You podcast
- HPU and You Facebook group
- HPU and You Instagram
- HPU and You YouTube
- HPU book “Why Am I So Tired?”
How do I know when I am well adjusted?
- Nutrient levels are within the normal to high-normal range
- Symptoms have improved or disappeared
- It is possible to switch to a maintenance dose
A repeat HPU urine test is not necessary. Instead, regular blood analyses are recommended.
I have doubts about my therapist’s recommendation. What can I do?
Talk to your therapist about your concerns. If you feel uncomfortable, changing therapists may be helpful. A list of trained HPU and You coaches® can be found here.
Does health insurance cover HPU therapy?
No, HPU is not officially recognized in Germany. Therefore, costs are usually not covered.
Which supplements should I start with for HPU therapy?
- Taurine (1 capsule)
- Zinc (1 capsule)
- Peat drink (Trinkmoor) (3×10 ml)
- L-Glutamine (approx. 5 g)
Increase slowly and introduce supplements one at a time.
Do I need to take zinc, manganese, and vitamin B6 even without a deficiency?
Maintenance doses can be useful. The correct dosage can be determined through regular blood analyses.
Can therapy remove the incorrectly formed heme?
Therapy helps regulate the metabolism so that as little incorrectly formed heme as possible is produced.
Nutrition
What should my diet look like with HPU?
In general, an anti-inflammatory diet is recommended. The goal is to calm the body’s system and support the organism during therapy.
Here you can find an overview of what your diet should look like during HPU therapy.
If you are looking for support, there is the HPUandYOU® cookbook with practical tips and recipes:
Do I need to change my diet for the rest of my life, or only during therapy?
A healthy diet is not a short-term diet but a lifestyle. This does not mean you can never eat sugar, etc. again – it is about balance.
However, if you return to your old eating habits after HPU therapy, symptoms may return or the healing process may slow down.
The further you progress in therapy, the more resilient your body becomes and the better it can handle less optimal foods.
I find it difficult to change my diet. What can I do?
At the beginning, a strict elimination diet helps calm the body, reduce oxidative stress, and lower inflammation.
That is why it can be helpful to temporarily avoid sugar, gluten, and dairy products. Later, you can test what and how much you can reintroduce.
The following resources may help you:
I want to filter my tap water. Which filter is suitable?
Tap water may contain residues of medications, hormones, or heavy metals. A high-quality filter can help remove these substances.
Do I need to filter my drinking water? – More info here
Recommended filter: The Local Water (activated carbon filter that removes pollutants while retaining minerals).
With the code HPUandYou5 you get 5% discount on filter devices, fittings, and energizers.
Detoxification
Do I need to do chelation therapy?
In my experience, only very few people with HPU need chelation therapy in order to recover. At first it may sound like a simple solution, but it is not.
Many people with HPU have reported in the HPU and You Facebook group that they felt worse after chelation therapy than before.
If micronutrients are well balanced and HPU is properly managed, the body’s natural detoxification processes improve on their own.
Chelation therapy is usually very expensive (often five-figure costs) and should only be considered if mineral levels are well optimized.
How do I approach detoxification correctly?
Detoxification is a continuous daily process in the body. By treating HPU, you automatically support detoxification.
You can learn how to approach HPU therapy holistically in the HPU Starter Program.
As a second step, detoxification can be further optimized here: more information.
Do I need to focus more on detox alongside HPU therapy?
A holistic HPU therapy already helps to reactivate the body’s natural detoxification systems.
Additionally, you can further optimize detoxification through the detox course.
How can I test for heavy metals?
A urine test does not show stored heavy metals. A more meaningful option is blood testing, for example at IMD Berlin.
Can I take chlorella for detox?
Chlorella is not recommended, as it may redistribute heavy metals and potentially worsen symptoms.
More information can be found in the HPU Starter Program.
Further details are available in the detox course for HPU.
How can I support my Phase 2 detoxification?
- Taurine – important for Phase 2
- Molybdenum – supports detox enzymes
- Cysteine & Glycine (Glutabuild) – building blocks for glutathione
- L-Glutamine – supports gut and detoxification
- And You Liver & Bile – supports liver and bile function
- Vitamin B5 – best via B-complex
- Sulfur (MSM)
- Sulforaphane – e.g. from broccoli sprouts, supports detox enzymes (also available as supplements)
- Methylation cycle must be functioning well (SAM, Folate, B12, B6…)
Many supplements from the and You Shop contain glycine as an excipient.
How do I recognize problems in detox phase 2?
Problems in detox phase 2 are not always directly noticeable. A common sign is a worsening of symptoms after introducing zinc, B6, and manganese – often existing symptoms become stronger again. People are also often very sensitive to many substances.
Typical symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Digestive issues
- Poor skin condition
- Joint and muscle pain
- Increased sensitivity to environmental toxins
If you want to go deeper, the detox course for HPU may be helpful.
Children
My child has HPU. How should I start therapy correctly?
You can learn more in the blog article or in Podcast episode 19 – Children with HPU: How to proceed?. If you want more targeted support, we recommend our children’s course, which is specifically designed for HPU therapy in children. Alternatively, you can find HPU and You coaches® in our therapist directory who also offer online consultations.
Can my child take the B-complex from the and You Shop?
Yes, this is generally possible without any issues.
Which supplements does my child need?
Ideally, your child should have a whole blood mineral analysis. Vitamin B6 can also be assessed via cystathionine in urine.
If no blood testing is possible, the following nutrients may be used:
- And You Mini (from age 4)
- And You Mini without manganese (under age 4)
- Vitamin D
- Omega-3 Kids oil
- L-Glutamine (optional)
For infants, a dosage of 1,000 IU vitamin D per day is sufficient. The and You Shop also offers additional supplements specifically designed for children – children’s product range.
Can I give And You Basic to my child?
Children from 4 years can take And You Basic. Depending on body weight, 1–2 capsules per day.
How do I dose And You Mini for my child?
At the beginning, open the capsule and start with half. Later, increase to a full capsule.
Older children (8–9 years) can take 2–3 capsules per day.
Should I start taurine before giving vitamin B6 to my child?
Usually not necessary. Children can start directly with And You Mini.
Which binder should I give my child?
Trinkmoor or none. Suitable product: Trinkmoor
Are And You Hista and SAMe suitable for children?
You can try And You Hista and SAMe. Start with half a capsule.
Histamine
How do I get rid of histamine intolerance?
The solution is not to carefully study food lists containing histamine and follow them for the rest of your life.
This may provide some relief, but it does not address the root cause of the problem.
Since the solution cannot be explained in just a few sentences, Sonja has created an in-depth video course on this topic. It provides a step-by-step guide on how to address histamine intolerance at its root:
How can I find out if I have a histamine problem?
Most people notice this through symptoms after eating histamine-rich foods. Keeping a food diary can also be helpful.
A urine test can also provide indications of histamine intolerance:
Binders
Can I take Chlorella as a binder?
Chlorella is not a classic binder because it does not bind toxins — it mobilizes them.
Especially in cases of HPU, Chlorella should generally not be taken, as it mobilizes toxins but does not ensure safe elimination.
You can learn more in the HPU Starter Program or in the Detox Course for HPU.
Do I need to keep a time gap from supplements or medications?
No time gap is needed for dietary supplements.
For medications, a gap of about 2 hours should usually be maintained unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
When is the best time to take binders?
Usually twice a day (morning and evening).
30 minutes before meals or with meals.
Which binders should I take? Is one enough?
Many HPU patients use ZeoBent (zeolite + bentonite) and/or Trinkmoor (humic substances).
Trinkmoor is gentler and supports the gut in cases of inflammation.
Zeolite binds histamine, fermentation toxins, and heavy metals and should be combined with bentonite.
Recommended products:
Are psyllium husks or healing clay enough?
Psyllium husks are gentle but do not specifically bind histamine or heavy metals.
Healing clay can be contaminated, which is why ZeoBent is preferred.
Which binder is suitable for children?
Often no binder is needed. If necessary, Trinkmoor is a gentle option.
Which binder for histamine intolerance?
ZeoBent or Trinkmoor are suitable, as both bind histamine.
Tolerance should be tested individually.
Can ZeoBent itself contain heavy metals?
ZeoBent is an approved medical product and is subject to strict quality controls.
Do I need to take binders permanently?
This depends on individual condition. Some use them in cycles, others as ongoing support.
For children, they are usually not necessary.
Do humic acid or zeolite also bind supplements?
No, only in negligible amounts. No time gap is needed.
I do not tolerate a binder. What can I do?
Introduce it slowly or try a different binder.
Genetic Testing
Where can I take a genetic test?
At SelfDecode in the USA. You can find more information here:
What can be done in case of an HNMT breakdown disorder?
First of all, you can support your methylation cycle, since histamine is initially marked with a methyl group for breakdown via this pathway.
You can find more information here:
Methylation and Histamine Breakdown
What can be done in case of an MTHFR disorder?
You should support your methylation cycle and check via a measurement of homocysteine levels whether everything is functioning properly:
In addition, you should supply your body with active folate and vitamin B12:
Alternatively, you can also include plenty of green leafy vegetables in your diet.
Interpreting genetic tests: I have the raw data of my genetic test. What now?
SelfDecode provides very detailed analyses on various health topics.
With MTHFR Genetics, you can specifically look at the expression of individual genes.
To learn more, there are two recommended books:
- “Dirty Genes” – Dr. Ben Lynch
- “Genetic Testing: Defining Your Path to Optimizing Health” – Christy Sutton
Alternatively, you can consult a therapist who can analyze your genetic test in detail, for example via Nutrigenomics Germany.
Do I need to repeat a genetic test like a blood analysis?
A genetic test is something you do once. Genes do not change over the course of a lifetime.
Only the interpretation of the data can change, as analytical algorithms become increasingly advanced and accurate.
Where do I send my SelfDecode genetic test?

HPU Diangose – Urintest
HPU Diagnosis – Urine Test
What goes wrong in HPU?
Simply and clearly explained, you can find the answer here or in my second podcast episode: What is HPU actually?.
Why is the medivere test called a pyrrole test? Does it actually measure HPU?
The term “HPU test” has been trademarked by the Dutch company Keac. Therefore, no laboratory is allowed to use this name. Since Keac is not an accredited laboratory, HPUandYou® exclusively uses the medivere test (accredited and ISO-certified). The medivere test detects pyrroles in urine via HPLC measurement.
I recently came across HPU. How should I proceed?
Step 1: Fill out the questionnaire
If you answer many questions with “yes”, an HPU/pyrrole test may be useful. More information can be found here and here.
Step 2: Order pyrrole test
Here you can order the test.
Step 3: Wait for results
After analysis you will receive your results and can plan the next steps.
Do I need to stop supplements before the test?
Yes, certain supplements can influence the test result and lead to a false negative result.
- Zinc, vitamin B6 (including P5P), and manganese should be stopped at least 7 days before the test.
- If you have been taking zinc and B6 for more than 3 months, a break of 4 weeks is recommended before testing.
- After an iron infusion, you should wait at least 4 weeks.
Is the 24-hour test more reliable?
No. The morning urine test is sufficient and reliable.
How do I interpret my test results?
- Creatinine (pyrroles):
- Indicates whether the urine is evaluable.
- 1.5 L fluid intake the day before is ideal.
- (Hemo-)pyrroles:
- An HPU is present from 6.0 mg/g creatinine.
Negative test despite symptoms?
First check whether the test preparation was followed correctly (zinc/B6 pause, morning urine, fluid intake, antibiotics, alcohol, etc.).
I have also observed that the HPU urine test can be falsely negative in cases of a very strong vitamin B6 deficiency. It is possible that the HPL complex can no longer be sufficiently excreted due to the severe B6 deficiency, which may lead to a negative result despite existing HPU.
→ Especially in borderline results and long-standing typical HPU symptoms, this should be considered.
Does it make a difference whether I have HPU or KPU?
Yes, differences between HPU and KPU are described. However, since the treatment recommendations are largely identical, this usually has no practical impact for patients.
More information can be found here.
Does the level of pyrrole indicate severity?
No. Values and symptoms do not reliably correlate. People with similar values can be affected very differently.
In addition, pyrrole levels fluctuate depending on the day and do not necessarily reflect symptom severity.
My test is positive. What happens next?
- My therapy guide gives you a structured overview of how a treatment plan can look.
- In the video training, you learn which mistakes are common at the beginning – and how to avoid them.
- On hpuandyou.de under “free knowledge” you will find blog articles and podcast episodes.
- The starter program guides you step by step through the entire HPU therapy at your own pace.
- If you want 1:1 support, you can find experienced HPUandYou® coaches in our therapist list.
Can HPU be diagnosed via blood test?
No.
Can I take the test during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Yes, this does not affect the test.
HPU test for children – how to collect urine?
For young children who are not yet dry at night, a collection bag from a pediatric practice or pharmacy can be used. The overnight collected urine can be taken as the sample in the morning. More information can be found here: HPU in children – HPU and You.
Does nighttime urination count as morning urine?
Collect urine from 24:00 onwards and mix it with the first morning urine after waking up. Instructions can be found here.
Borderline result (just below/above 6.0)?
A value around 6.0 is considered positive and is a clear indication that holistic therapy is useful. How to start is explained in my guide.

No. The value and symptoms do not correlate reliably. People with similar values can be affected very differently.
In addition, the pyrrole value is dependent on daily variation and can fluctuate. It therefore does not necessarily reflect symptom severity.
My test is positive. What happens next?
Now it’s about starting therapy in a well-informed way. The following resources can help you:
- My guide to HPU therapy gives you a structured overview of how a treatment plan can look.
- In the video training you learn which common mistakes happen at the beginning – and how to avoid them.
- On hpuandyou.de under “free knowledge”, you will find blog articles and podcast episodes about HPU.

Can HPU be diagnosed via blood test?
No.
Can the test be done during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Yes, this does not affect the test.
HPU test in children – how to collect urine?
For small children who are not yet dry at night, an adhesive urine bag (available in pharmacies or pediatric clinics) can be used. The urine collected overnight can be used as the morning sample. More information can be found here: HPU in children.
Does nighttime urination count as morning urine?
Collect urine from 24:00 onwards and mix it with the first morning urine after waking up. Instructions can be found here.
Borderline test result (just below/above 6.0)?
A value around 6.0 is considered positive and is a clear indication that holistic therapy is recommended. More information on how to start can be found in my guide.
Blood Values
I would like to have my blood values checked. Which values should I test, and where?
In our free guide you will find the most important markers for starting your HPU therapy.
During therapy, it can be useful to check additional blood values or lab tests – especially if you are not making progress.
Do I need to fast before a blood mineral analysis?
No. According to IMD, fasting is not required for mineral analysis in whole blood.
Do I need to stop taking supplements before a blood test?
Pausing supplements for 24 hours before the test is usually enough to assess blood levels correctly.
Can I do the whole blood mineral analysis at IMD Berlin from Switzerland or Austria?
Yes. Please contact the customer service of IMD Berlin for arrangements.
What do I need to consider when taking supplements?
The most important thing is THAT you take them. The exact timing is less important. Don’t let it become stressful—choose times that fit your daily routine and spread intake over 2–3 doses per day. A distance is only needed from medications.
Tip: A simple intake plan can help.
Why is my zinc level not increasing?
There can be several reasons:
- Too little zinc-rich food
- Absorption issues due to calcium, iron, copper, phosphate, selenium, or vitamin C
- Phytates binding zinc (e.g. oats/porridge taken at the same time)
- Diarrhea or weak liver function
- Increased demand due to stress or inflammation
Important: Do not increase zinc blindly. Gut health plays a major role—if digestion is impaired, zinc cannot be absorbed properly.
How should iron be tested and supplemented?
Ferritin is the key marker for assessing iron stores. If levels are low, iron can be supplemented in a targeted way. 15–20 mg daily is often sufficient.
Iron bisglycinate is highly bioavailable and usually well tolerated. If iron absorption is difficult or ferritin does not rise adequately despite supplementation, iron with lactoferrin may be useful, as lactoferrin can support iron absorption and metabolism.
My phosphorus level is low. What can I do?
Often protein intake is insufficient. Support with protein-rich nutrition or essential amino acids:
My homocysteine is too high/too low. Why?
- Too high: support with folate and B12 – here
- Too low: increase protein or sulfur-containing amino acids. More about methylation here
Is there a blood test for food intolerances?
An LTT test from IMD Berlin can be used as a diagnostic option. More information here.
Why can’t I correct my deficiencies?
- Poor gut health
- Incorrect dosages or stress
- Missing cofactors
Helpful support can be the HPU start program or an HPUandYou® coach.
My copper level is too high/too low. What should I do?
More information in the blog article and podcast episode 24 – “No fear of copper”.
What do good blood values look like in HPU?
Many people feel best with high-normal levels of magnesium, zinc, selenium, manganese, and molybdenum.
How should iodine be tested?
An iodine urine test is more meaningful than blood testing. More information about iodine here.
Why are my manganese levels high?
This may indicate a weakened liver. Plant substances such as artichoke, milk thistle, and dandelion may help. A suitable product can be found here.
Important: Do not overdose manganese.
Gut
Gut
I would like to have my gut examined. Which gut test is suitable? Is it also useful for leaky gut?
A comprehensive gut test can be found here. It also includes parameters for detecting leaky gut.
I have low stomach acid. What can I do?
This often regulates once vitamin B6 levels increase. Taurine can help, as it supports stomach acid production.
In more severe cases, Betaine HCl may be helpful.
How do I test and treat small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)?
Diagnosis is made via a breath test. You can order the test here.
With the code hpuandyou, you get 10% off. Depending on the type of SIBO, Embelly offers a treatment concept.
My protein digestion is poor. What can I do?
This is often due to low stomach acid – usually a consequence of vitamin B6 deficiency.
How can I find out which foods I don’t tolerate?
Reactions are often delayed. Causes can include low stomach acid, intestinal inflammation, or an overactive nervous system.
Keep a food diary for 2 weeks and record what you eat and how you feel.
If that is not enough: gut analysis or intolerance testing such as the LTT test at IMD.
For IgG tests: IgG 1–3 are preferred. IgG4 is controversial and expensive.
How can I support my gut as someone with HPU?
- In basic gut restoration, a binding agent can be useful, e.g.:
- Trinkmoor – binds histamine and has anti-inflammatory effects
- Zeolite + bentonite – binds histamine and heavy metals, gentle on the intestinal lining
- L-glutamine supports the intestinal lining – here.
- Synerga is often used to stimulate the intestinal mucosa.
→ Introduce supplements slowly and one at a time.
- It is also important to follow an anti-inflammatory diet:
- Free from grains/gluten, sugar, dairy products, and processed foods
- Lifestyle adjustments – avoid environmental toxins, regulate the nervous system, relaxation
→ Many factors work together to strengthen the gut long-term.
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 & Taurine
Why should I start with taurine before taking vitamin B6?
Many people with HPU are very sensitive to vitamin B6. Taurine “opens” the B6 metabolism, so that B6 is better tolerated when introduced.
Taurine improves digestion, balances neurotransmitters, and supports detoxification. Therefore, it is recommended to include taurine in the therapy.
How much vitamin B6 should I take?
This is individual and depends on your needs and tolerance. Most people with HPU feel well with 50 mg. The range is between 25–75 mg. Amounts up to 100 mg are considered safe. Increase the dose slowly to avoid side effects.
Which vitamin B6 supplement should I take?
- Choose the active form P5P
- Take it as a single supplement, not a combined formula
- Start slowly and gradually increase the dosage
Here you can find vitamin B6 products in different dosages.
How can I find out if I have a vitamin B6 deficiency?
It is recommended to measure bioactive vitamin B6 (P5P) at IMD Berlin.
- Values above 10 = sufficient
- Values above 30 = optimal
I am sensitive to vitamin B6. What can I do?
- Use vitamin B6 as P5P
- Start with taurine
- Reduce dosage and increase slowly
- Check cofactors (zinc, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B2)
- If needed, add a B-complex
Are high doses dangerous?
Vitamin B6 is water-soluble and up to 100 mg daily is considered safe. Overdoses may cause neuropathy, which usually resolves after stopping intake.
I cannot correct my B6 deficiency. What can I do?
- Use P5P and taurine
- Check cofactors (zinc, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B2)
- Rule out gut issues (leaky gut, SIBO)
- Add a B-complex – B vitamins always work together
- Monitor levels every 3–4 months
Do I need to take vitamin B6 permanently?
If you stop, levels should be checked later, as people with HPU tend to excrete more vitamin B6.
How do I find the right P5P dosage?
A guideline is 50 mg per day. Individual adjustment is necessary. Symptoms of overdosing may include vivid dreams, inner restlessness, or headaches.
Dietary Supplements
At which manufacturer can I buy dietary supplements for my HPU therapy?
At the and You Shop you will find dietary supplements specifically developed for people with HPU. All products are manufactured in Germany, are ISO- and organic-certified, and contain no unnecessary additives. They are also free from citrates and therefore suitable for people with histamine intolerance.
I am looking for a multivitamin. Which one can I take?
In the and You Shop you will find the and you multi (aktiv) without copper. This multivitamin is designed for those who are already taking the basic HPU nutrients.
I want to switch to a combined supplement. When is the best time to do this? Which product is suitable?
In the and You Shop there are two HPU combination products for basic supply:
- And You Basic → ideal for starting HPU therapy.
- And You Advanced → for the maintenance phase.
Can’t I just take a combined supplement instead of all the individual ones?
A combined supplement is usually not sufficient to correct major deficiencies. It mainly serves as a basic supply. Individual supplements allow much more precise dosing tailored to your personal needs and can be adjusted when necessary—especially at the beginning of HPU therapy.
Which capsules can I open?
In general, most capsules can be opened—except:
- Iron
- Enzymes
- Probiotics
- Enteric-coated capsules
These should always be swallowed whole.
Are the products from the and You Shop also suitable for people with histamine intolerance?
Yes, all products are free from citrates and therefore suitable.
Why do many people with HPU take glutathione?
Glutathione plays an important role in detoxification. Since it consists of the amino acids L-glutamine, cysteine, and glycine, it may be more effective for HPU patients to take these building blocks individually so that the body can produce glutathione itself.
When is the best time to take CoQ10?
CoQ10 should be taken in the morning or at midday with a meal.
What can I use to support detoxification?
Detoxification in HPU is complex and depends on many factors—from nutrients like zinc, vitamin B6, and glutathione building blocks to stress reduction and reducing toxin exposure in daily life. For targeted liver support, and you Liver/Bile is suitable. If you want to go deeper, the Start Program and the Detox Optimization Course are recommended.
Which form of magnesium should I take?
It depends on your goal and symptoms. Well-tolerated all-round options include magnesium bisglycinate, malate, and taurate—they support energy, nerves, muscles, sleep, and stress regulation. If you need higher doses, the powder form is best.
For sensitive stomachs or special sensitivity, magnesium gluconate is a good option.
Magnesium L-threonate can cross the blood-brain barrier and works directly in the brain—especially interesting for brain fog, concentration issues, and sleep problems.
Why should I take taurine?
Taurine supports vitamin B6 metabolism as well as digestion and detoxification.
Is there a discount for the and You Shop?
Participants of the HPU Start Program receive a 10% discount. In addition, there are regular promotions via social media and the newsletter. You can also join the loyalty program to collect points with every purchase and redeem them for discounts.
Side effects
Why do I often read that many dietary supplements (NEMs) are not well tolerated? What is the reason for this?
I believe 95% of people with HPU tolerate their supplements well—it’s just that those cases are rarely shared publicly. However, there are HPU individuals with a strong histamine intolerance, a salicylate intolerance, or an oral nickel allergy—in these cases, tolerance issues can occur.
What side effects can occur from taking dietary supplements?
The symptoms that may occur in connection with supplements are very diverse. However, it is not always certain that they are actually caused by the nutrients. Here are some of the most common side effects:
- Fatigue
- Lack of energy
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Anxiety, panic attacks
- Inner restlessness
- Palpitations / rapid heartbeat
- Nausea
- Migraines
I don’t tolerate supplement X. What can I do?
First, stop the supplement and observe whether your symptoms improve. If not, the cause is likely elsewhere. If yes, it may be that your body is currently not ready for this supplement.
What you can do:
- Reduce the dosage and restart with a smaller amount.
- Get a new full-blood mineral analysis (every 3–4 months) to adjust your intake. More information here.
- Check whether you have a histamine or salicylate intolerance, as some products may trigger symptoms.
- Use high-quality products with good bioavailability.
- Work with a therapist or HPUandYOU® coach to clarify individual intolerances. Therapist list here.
I can’t tolerate anything at all. What should I do?
This can have many causes, for example:
- Overactive mast cells
- Poor gut health
- Heavy metal burden
- Blocked detox pathways
- Histamine intolerance
- Salicylate intolerance
If you cannot tolerate anything, you should consult a therapist to identify the underlying cause. Online consultations are also possible. Here you can find a list of therapists.
Can I reduce or eliminate my high sensitivity through HPU therapy?
High sensitivity is very common in HPU. Some people notice that it decreases slightly with a well-adjusted therapy—but in most cases it does not disappear completely. It is equally important to learn how to live with it and adapt your lifestyle accordingly.
Sonja shares her personal experience from the HPUandYou Facebook group:
“I accepted it and stored it as a personality trait that I am not the very extroverted type. Since I accepted this and aligned my life accordingly, I feel much better.
When events with many people are coming up, I make sure to have rest before and after. I also plan my holidays and leisure activities accordingly. It works great.
How about actively shaping your social meetings? Meet for a walk instead of a loud restaurant, in the afternoon instead of drinking alcohol in the evening. It works well for me.”
If you want to connect with others, join the Facebook group.
I struggle with inner restlessness, anxiety, and panic attacks. What can I do?
HPU can be a contributing factor to anxiety disorders. The body is often in an unstable state—especially when histamine symptoms are also present.
What you can do:
- Start HPU therapy to stabilize your body. More information in the HPU Start Program.
- Regulate the nervous system through targeted exercises or support with and You Calm, which helps balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.
- Check vitamin B6 levels, as low B6 can worsen anxiety. Too rapid supplementation can also cause restlessness.
- Test for heavy metals, as they can burden the nervous system.
For support, you can find HPUandYOU® coaches in the therapist directory or exchange with others in the Facebook group.
Therapy
Why do I have HPU? And will I have it for the rest of my life?
HPU stands for haemopyrrollactamuria and describes a metabolic disorder of the heme metabolism. There is still no single clearly defined cause of HPU.
It is suspected to be either genetically influenced or, in some cases, acquired (for example after cervical spine trauma). More information can be found here.
Yes, HPU is considered a lifelong condition. However, it is possible to live completely symptom-free if the condition is well managed through a holistic therapy approach and ongoing metabolic support.
Why do people with HPU have so many symptoms?
In HPU, there is a deficiency in heme and key micronutrients (most commonly vitamin B6, manganese, and zinc). As a result, detoxification and many metabolic processes are impaired, which can lead to a wide range of symptoms.
A more detailed explanation can be found in the book
“Why Am I So Tired?”.
How long does it take to notice improvements from HPU therapy?
This depends on your initial condition and how consistently you follow the therapy plan.
Most people with HPU notice initial improvements after about 4–6 months of consistent therapy.
I’m looking for a therapist to support my HPU therapy. Where can I find one?
You can find a list of trained HPU therapists here. All HPUandYou® coaches have completed an extensive training program. Online support is also available.
If you prefer to follow the therapy independently, there is the HPU Start Program—a structured self-study course with step-by-step guidance.
I’m completely new to HPU and want to learn more. What resources are available?
- HPU and You website
- HPU and You blog
- HPU and You podcast
- HPU and You Facebook group
- HPU and You Instagram
- HPU and You YouTube
- Book: “Why Am I So Tired?”
How do I know when I am well adjusted?
- Nutrient levels are in the normal to high-normal range
- Symptoms have improved or disappeared
- It is possible to switch to a maintenance dosage
A repeat HPU urine test is not necessary. Instead, regular blood analysis is recommended.
I have doubts about my therapist’s recommendations. What can I do?
Talk openly with your therapist about your concerns. If you feel uncomfortable, switching therapists may be an option. A list of qualified HPUandYou® coaches is available here.
Is HPU therapy covered by health insurance?
No, HPU is not officially recognized in many countries, including Germany. Therefore, treatment costs are usually not covered by health insurance.
Which supplements should I start with for HPU therapy?
- Taurine (1 capsule)
- Zinc (1 capsule)
- Trinkmoor (3×10 ml)
- L-Glutamine (approx. 5 g)
Increase slowly and introduce supplements one at a time.
Do I need to take zinc, manganese, and vitamin B6 even without a deficiency?
Maintenance dosing can be useful. The correct dosage should be determined through regular blood analysis.
Can therapy remove the incorrectly formed heme?
Therapy helps regulate metabolism so that as little faulty heme as possible is produced.
Diet
What should my diet look like in HPU?
Basically, it should be an anti-inflammatory diet that calms the body’s system and supports the organism during therapy.
Here you will find an overview of how your diet should look during HPU therapy.
If you are looking for support, there is also the HPUandYOU® cookbook with practical tips and recipes:
Do I need to change my diet for the rest of my life, or only during therapy?
A healthy diet is not a short-term diet, but a lifestyle. This does not mean you will never be allowed to eat sugar etc. again – it is about balance.
However, if you return to your old eating habits after HPU therapy, symptoms may return or the healing process may slow down.
The further you progress in therapy, the more resilient your body becomes and the better it can handle less optimal foods.
I find it difficult to change my diet. What can I do?
At the beginning, strict avoidance helps calm the body, reduce oxidative stress, and lower inflammation.
That is why it helps to temporarily avoid sugar, gluten, and cow’s milk products. Later, you can test what you can reintroduce and in what amount.
The following can help make the transition easier:
I want to filter my tap water. Which filter is suitable?
Tap water can contain residues of medications, hormones, or heavy metals. A high-quality filter can help remove these substances.
Do I need to filter my drinking water? – More info here
Recommended filter: The Local Water (activated carbon filter that removes contaminants while preserving minerals).
With the code HPUandYou5 you get 5% discount on filter systems, fittings, and energizers.
Detoxification
Do I need to do chelation therapy?
In my experience, only very few HPU patients actually need chelation therapy to recover. At first it may sound like a simple solution, but it is not.
Many HPU patients in the HPU and You Facebook group have reported feeling worse after chelation therapy.
If micronutrients are well balanced and HPU is properly supported, the body’s own detoxification improves naturally.
Chelation therapy is usually very expensive (often five-figure costs) and should only be considered when mineral levels are very well optimized.
How do I approach detoxification correctly?
Detoxification is a daily process of the body. By treating your HPU, you automatically support detox pathways.
You can learn a complete and structured approach in the HPU Start Program.
In a second step, detox can be supported more specifically:
Read more here.
Do I need to focus more on detox in addition to HPU therapy?
A holistic HPU therapy already helps to reactivate your body’s natural detoxification systems.
Additionally, you can further optimize detoxification with the detox program.
How can I test for heavy metals?
A urine test does not reliably show stored heavy metals. A more useful approach is blood testing, for example via IMD Berlin.
Can I take chlorella for detox?
Chlorella is not recommended, as it may redistribute heavy metals in the body and worsen symptoms.
More information is available in the HPU Start Program.
Further details can be found in the detox course for HPU patients.
How can I support phase 2 detoxification?
- Taurine – important for phase 2
- Molybdenum – supports detox enzymes
- Cysteine & Glycine (Glutabuild) – building blocks for glutathione
- L-Glutamine – supports gut and detoxification
- Liver & Bile – supports liver and gallbladder
- Vitamin B5 – best via a B-complex
- Sulfur (MSM)
- Sulforaphane – e.g. from broccoli sprouts, supports detox enzymes (also available as supplement)
- Methylation cycle must function well! (SAM, Folate, B12, B6…)
How do I recognize problems in phase 2 detoxification?
Problems in phase 2 detox are not always immediately noticeable. A common sign is worsening symptoms after introducing zinc, B6, and manganese – often existing symptoms become stronger again. People may also become very sensitive to many substances.
Typical symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Digestive issues
- Poor skin
- Joint and muscle pain
- Increased sensitivity to environmental toxins
If you want to go deeper, the detox course for HPU patients may be helpful.
Children
My child has HPU. How should I approach the therapy correctly?
You can learn more about this in the blog article or in Podcast episode 19 – Children with HPU: How to proceed?. If you need targeted support, we recommend our children’s course, which is specifically designed for HPU therapy in children. Alternatively, you can find HPUandYOU® coaches in our therapist directory who also offer online consultations.
Can my child take the B-complex from the and You Shop?
Yes, this is completely fine.
Which supplements does my child need?
Ideally, your child should have a whole blood mineral analysis. Vitamin B6 can also be measured via cystathionine in urine.
If no blood testing is possible, you can give the following nutrients:
- And You Mini (from age 4)
- And You Mini without manganese (under age 4)
- Vitamin D
- Omega-3 Kids oil
- L-glutamine (optional)
For infants, a dosage of 1,000 IU vitamin D per day is sufficient. In the and You Shop you will also find other supplements specifically developed for children – children’s product range.
Can I give And You Basic to my child?
Children from 4 years can take And You Basic. Depending on body weight, 1–2 capsules per day.
How do I dose And You Mini for my child?
At the beginning, open the capsule and start with half. Later increase to a full capsule.
Older children (8–9 years) can take 2–3 capsules per day.
Should I also start taurine before giving vitamin B6 to my child?
Usually not necessary. Children can start directly with And You Mini.
Which binder should I give my child?
Trinkmoor or none. Suitable product: Trinkmoor.
Are And You Hista and SAMe suitable for children?
You can try And You Hista and SAMe. Start with half a capsule.
Histamine
How can I get rid of histamine intolerance?
The solution is not to constantly check food lists for histamine content and follow them strictly for the rest of your life.
While this may provide temporary relief, it does not address the root cause of the problem.
Since the solution cannot be fully explained in just a few sentences, Sonja has created an in-depth video course. It provides a step-by-step guide on how to address histamine intolerance at its root:
How can I find out if I have a histamine issue?
Most people notice this through symptoms after eating histamine-rich foods. Keeping a food and symptom diary can be very helpful.
A urine test can also provide indications of histamine intolerance:
Binder
Can I use Chlorella as a binding agent?
Chlorella is not a classic binding agent because it does not bind toxins directly, but rather mobilizes them.
Especially in HPU, chlorella is generally not recommended because it can mobilize toxins without ensuring proper elimination.
You can learn more about this in the HPU Start Program or in the Detox Optimization Course for HPU.
Do I need to keep a time gap between supplements or medications?
No time gap is required for dietary supplements.
For medications, a gap of about 2 hours is usually recommended, unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer.
When is the best time to take binders?
Usually twice daily (morning and evening).
Take them either 30 minutes before meals or with a meal.
Which binders should I take? Is one enough?
Many HPU patients use ZeoBent (zeolite + bentonite) and/or Trinkmoor (humic substances).
Trinkmoor is gentler and supports the gut in cases of inflammation.
Zeolite binds histamine, fermentation toxins, and heavy metals and is usually combined with bentonite.
Recommended products:
Are psyllium husks or healing clay enough?
Psyllium husks are gentle but do not specifically bind histamine or heavy metals.

Interpreting genetic tests: I have my raw data. What now?
SelfDecode provides very detailed analyses on various health topics.
At MTHFR Genetics, you can specifically look at the expression of individual genes.
To go deeper into this topic, two recommended books are:
- “Dirty Genes” – Dr. Ben Lynch
- “Genetic Testing: Defining Your Path to Optimizing Health” – Christy Sutton
Alternatively, you can consult a therapist who can analyze your genetic test in detail, for example via Nutrigenomics Germany.

A genetic test is done only once. Genes do not change throughout life.
What does change is how the data can be interpreted — algorithms are continuously improving and becoming more accurate.
